BURN AFTER READING Come read my letters, consume my words, I’ll make them better than anything you’ve heard, All you have to do is burn them after reading. Come round and see the walls I’ve built, My borrowed cat, the blood I’ve spilt, Then all that’s left to do is burn it as you’re leaving. The shifting boundary’s getting loose… That circles ’round our world of two… My empty book, your broken frame, The wine is warm, the song remains the same, But everything feels different when you’re yearning. I’ll dress in black, you’ll dress in white, You’ll be the day, I’ll be the night, And we’ll be side by side in the gentle light of morning. The shifting boundary’s getting loose… That circles round our world of two… High-five the moon, embrace the dark, Untie your hair, unlock your heart, Everything unravels without warning. Come read my letters, consume my words, I’ll make them better than anything you’ve heard, All you have to do is burn them after reading, burn them after reading, burn them after reading.

Come With Me 02:45
COME WITH ME – Wayne Pauli Leave your harbour and come with me, I am more than ready. I’ll take you over and safely, Home across the raging sea. Won’t you come with me in the more sun, And away with the tides we’ll run. Some promises like dust are blown, Carry a tune into the unknown. Kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall, But my love for you is strong and tall. Won’t you come with me in the more sun, And away with the tides we’ll run. Hear my voice I am calling you, With a song that bold and new For if days are as the sands, Swiftly they run through your hands Won’t you come with me in the more sun, And away with the tides we’ll run. You and me in the morning sun, Now away with the tides we’ll run

PIETERMARITZBURG I know that you can see me sitting underneath my tree, Blanket in a packet, puppy on my knee. I have a sorry story I’d like to tell to you, Can’t promise that you’ll like it but I promise you its true I’m 67 years today, been unemployed for 10, I used to have a family, but that was way back when. Can I trouble you for 5 bucks or a cigarette or two, You look like you are decent and charitable too. And maybe I’ll buy liquor or maybe I’ll buy bread, The one that kills me quicker is the one that cools my head I’m a poor man from Pietermaritzburg and I’ll watch your car for you You're right I see you as I try to park my car, My kids are in the back seat, my husband's at the bar Your strawberry suntan, mouth of missing teeth, You'll ask if you can help to pack my groceries... And sure I'll give you 5 bucks for cigarettes or booze, You've had a life of bad luck and I drink for comfort too, You're a poor man from Pietermaritzburg...I have a father just like you Let me tell you one thing, before I let you go, I might not look like much but there’s a few things that I know. I used to have a pretty wife, lovely children too, I’ve hurt the people close to me, I’ve dished out bruises too So go and find your husband and drag him from the bar Before the Sheriff comes to take your house and your car Somewhere here in Maritzburg, I have a daughter just like you We live here in Maritzburg and we live side by side But the distance between us has never felt so wide Staring at each other...from across the great divide I'll think of you this evening as I put my kids to sleep My husband drunk and snoring in front of the TV I'll think of my old mother and how she used to say, The downfall of a man is never far away So go and buy your quarts of beer, forget about the bread, We're never getting out of here and we'll both still end up dead But being poor in Pietermarizburg is like dying everyday...

CALLING OUT TO YOU I’ve been calling out to you, since the days were long, Since the days were long, I’ve been singing this song. You’ve been reaching out to me, with your words so sweet, With your words so sweet, you’ve been reaching out to me… And I know this feeling’s strong and I know this feeling’s right, And I’m burning for your love, staying hopeful here tonight…tonight I’ve been talking in my sleep, you’ve been dancing in your dreams, We’ve been holding onto something that is bigger than our fears. So let me wrap you up in love, let’s be gentle in our fight, Curled up tight against your tears, I’ll shield you from the light. And I know this feeling’s right and I know that we are strong, And I’m holding both your hands in mine, until your pain is gone, And I know this feeling’s strong and I know this feeling’s right, And I’m burning for your love, staying hopeful here tonight…tonight That same lost look is in your eyes, that I thought we’d left behind, That I thought we’d left behind in the corners of your mind. Why don’t you while away the day, why don’t you sleep on it tonight, And in the morning I’ll be your again and by the evening you’ll be mine… And I know this feeling’s right and I know that we are strong, And I’m holding both your hands in mine, until your pain is gone, And I know this feeling’s strong and I know this feeling’s right, And I’m burning for your love, staying hopeful here tonight…tonight

A WEEK IN THE CAPE I've got ghosts in three cities, demons in my sleep, You are my witness, my secrets you keep. Now stumbling without in the cold light of day, I'm just a player in need of a play. I walked down Longmarket, Wale Street and Brie, I searched for our tower, the old you and me, And I stood under archways like mouths looking forlorn, My Prima Donna it's almost the dawn. I think of you sleeping, I think of you warm, I wrestle the darkness till I'm ragged and torn. You say the wind's biting though the fields are still green, The props are all ready, you're setting the scene. So put on your armour and pick up your sword, I'll find a guitar and sound out the chords, And we'll meet in the wings while the curtains are drawn, My prima donna it's almost the dawn. So put on your armour and pick up your sword, I'll find a guitar and sound out the chords, And maybe you'll leave me in love or maybe in scorn, My prima donna it's almost the dawn, My prima donna it's almost the dawn.

ARE YOU ARDENT? Are you ardent, my darling, in your quest for me? Can you understand my selfish need for liberty? When I carry you, can it be whilst you carry me? Are you ardent, my darling, do you love me? The sun is shining on the rectory, And you’re leaving in the morning. I’ll be waiting please come back to me, Are you ardent, my darling, do you love me? Show me slow… breath and skin… I am fallen, I am broken, I am hungry, And in my darkest hour you have fed me. I have followed where you’ve led me, Are you ardent, my darling, do you love me? When you hold it all inside you, When you leave as dawn is calling, When the mirror sees right through you, I am ardent, my darling, how I love you. Low and slow...breath and skin... The sun is shining on the rectory, And you’re leaving in the morning. I’ll be waiting please come back to me, Are you ardent, my darling, do you love me?

GHOST TRAIN THROUGH THE FREESTATE An old forgotten ghost train through the free state Won’t deviate or change its former line From Bethelehem and down into the mountains No-one’s waiting but the driver runs on time You see Harrismith has fallen from its grace A man can’t even find a place to eat It seems they’re only selling empty houses The agencies dividing up the streets But you know that there were people here You know that there were people here… You know that there were people not just silos and steeples You know that there were people here… So you drive away in silent disbelief boy And you figure that with time you’ll understand And then you start to realise you’re only dreaming When you see the broken signs in Ladybrand But you keep on heading west and you’re still hopeful And the ghost train keeps a vigil by your side And you pass through towns and places you’ve forgotten And some others that you’ve never even tried But I know that there were people here I know that there were people here… I know that there were people not just silos and steeples I know that there were people here… In Rouxville they sell petrol with a name you’ve never heard But at least there’s someone there to fill you up And you drain another tank as you seek the people out Just searching for a place to fill your cup Until you realise there is no destination There is no single place that looks the same And Colesberg lies ahead of you just waiting… Waiting and praying for the rain And you just out there waiting for the train….

YOU NEVER LET ME DOWN Sleep, sleep, oh my little one Save you worries for another day Sleep for me, sleep for everyone With a broken heart Sing, sing, oh my pretty Save your silence for another day Sing for me, sing for everyone Who’s been down that road You never let me down, You never let me down. Weep, weep oh my only one Save your smiling for a rainy day Weep for me, weep for anyone With a happy heart Who never let you down, Who never let you down. Love, love oh my only one Save you heartache for another day Love for me love for anyone With a lonely heart. But now sleep Sleep my little one Leave your worries for another day Sleep for me, sleep for everyone With a broken heart….

Greenpeace 03:50
GREENPEACE If you could look into the waters of a mountain stream What would he say if he could speak his mind and tell you how he feels Some they say, will hear the whispers in the wind some day lurid laments about a world gone by when we cared more for ourselves, tried to build not destroy… But how on earth can we expect to change the world By we’re leaving all our troubles for the morning Latitudes and longitudes unfurl as we play with fire Polar tears are trying to warn us of impending years When we will melt the very ends of earth What is the point of being famous if we die?? But how on earth can we expect to change the world By we’re leaving all our troubles for the morning Latitudes and longitudes unfurl as we play with fire So how we can we in all our might proclaim That the human race will someday end in sorrow Faintest are the bitter final flames As we play with fire… The sun will shine today The sun will shine again But the question still remains Will we be there or will we stay the same

about

Dave Starke Eshowe, South Africa

Dave Starke strives to capture human moments in musical form - to sum up a whole host of thoughts and emotions using just his voice and a guitar. He describes the guitar as a “wooden box with strings, tensioned to near breaking point – it’s fundamental, honest and often scary and it’s a good metaphor for the human experience…” ... more
